Forma

Forma is an interesting, geometric font. Each letter is made out of itself. The letters have been flipped, rotated, and reflected. It is not a font that is supposed to be understood right away. Each letter must be examined carefully to determine what it is, making it intriguing, fascinating, and somewhat confusing. Forma takes pride in being unique. It is an individualist, an non-conformist. It doesn’t just go with the flow and it is untraditional. Forma is confident and can stand up for itself. Each letter is a picture, shape or form, hence the name Forma. Each letter can stand alone and be beautiful in itself. Not only is the whole font different, but each individual letter, symbol, and number are different from the rest.

Was Liegt, das Pickt

Was Liegt, das Pickt is an Austrian phrase that I have heard since childhood. There is no english equivalent to the phrase, but it basically means, if you throw away a card in a card game,  you can’t take it back. I will just say this now, I was an angry child who HATED losing. Obviously, I have come to terms with the fact that a game is just a game, but back then losing was the worst. When I was I was playing cards with my grandparents, I would always accidentally put down a card, realizing 5 seconds later I wanted to keep the card. I would always hear the dreaded words “was leigt, das pickt”. I wanted to represent this phrase visually, including numbers to represent the card game. I wanted to design using colors that meant something both to Americans and Austrians. In Austria, red is a main color of the flag and represents bravery, strength, and valor, which I did not have. Light blue represents calmness, which I also did not have. In America red means danger and excitement, while blue means trust. These contrasting colors with contrasting meanings represent my memory of playing cars with my grandparents. They are fond, happy memories, with a slight feeling of anxiety.
